【Viet Hoa International School Newsletter】

This week, VHIS officially launched its Science Camp, welcoming students to the very first session. Fourteen students from across Ho Chi Minh City gathered together, full of focus and curiosity, marking the beginning of their scientific exploration journey.

👨‍🏫 Opening Remarks
The session began with a speech by Vice Principal Yang Kun-Lin, who warmly welcomed all participants and introduced the structure of the program. He emphasized that this Science Camp differs from traditional classroom teaching, as it centers on teacher–student interaction and Learn by doing, aiming to cultivate scientific thinking and research spirit through the integration of theory and practice.

🧠 Week 1 Theme: Probiotics and Memory in Mice
Before diving into experiments, Vice Principal Yang provided a biomedical introduction, starting with Alzheimer’s disease to highlight the importance of brain health. He then led students to explore the relationship between gut microbiota and cognitive function. Through videos, explanations, and case studies, he gradually built the research background and encouraged students to “think, search, and discuss,” developing their ability to find answers independently.

This week’s lessons focused on the Morris water maze and the land maze model, investigating how probiotics affect spatial learning and cognitive performance in animals. Two main research directions were introduced:

  • Effects of Probiotic Supplementation (Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum) on Spatial Learning and Memory in Mice: Evidence from the Morris Water Maze

  • Probiotic Intervention with Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum Enhances Cognitive Performance in Mice: Insights from a Land Maze Model

Through experiment design and data observation, students not only learned the basics of scientific research but also deepened their understanding of the connection between gut microbiota and brain function.

🎓 Learning Outcomes

  • Knowledge: Gained hands-on experience in experiment design and understood the link between theory and data.

  • Attitude: Demonstrated focus, active participation, and confidence in presenting ideas.

  • Inspiration: Experienced the challenges and joys of scientific exploration, opening a new chapter in their learning journey.

As a follow-up, students were assigned homework to design a maze, applying what they learned creatively to real-life contexts.

🔭 Looking Ahead
With the Science Camp now officially underway, students will continue to explore more interdisciplinary topics in the coming weeks—from animal behavior to molecular biology—gradually nurturing their scientific spirit and research abilities as they embark on a broader learning journey.
